Man (70s) killed in road traffic accident in Mountmellick

A man in his 70s has been killed in a road traffic accident in Mountmellick this evening.

The incident occurred when a pedestrian was hit by a lorry shortly before 5pm on Chapel Lane in Mountmellick, close to Hinches garage and filling station on the Tullamore road out of the town.

The male pedestrian, aged in his 70s, was fatally injured and his body is currently at the scene. The male driver of the lorry, did not require medical attention.

The road remains closed at this time as Garda Forensic Collision investigators are due to examine the scene. Local diversions are in place.

Gardai in Portlaoise are investigating the incident and are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward.

Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling on Chapel Lane, N80, Mountmellick, Co. Laois between 4.30pm and 5pm are asked to make this footage available to Gardaí.
