There is deep sadness around the town of Mountmellick after a fatal traffic incident occurred yesterday.

The incident occurred when a pedestrian was hit by a lorry shortly before 5pm on Chapel Lane in Mountmellick, close to Hinches garage and filling station on the Tullamore road out of the town on Monday evening.

The victim has been named locally as Seamus O’Riordain, 72, of Davitt Road, Acragar.

Seamus was born in Mountmellick, lived with his family and worked in the town all his life.

He worked for many years with Fennelly’s Television Rental and Repairs, where he serviced, repaired and installed televisions.

Later he had a business of his own in the town, before working in a factory in Naas and then in the Sorting Office in An Post.

After his retirement, Seamus enjoyed nothing more than his daily walk around the town of Mountmellick.

Local County Councillor Paddy Bracken described the incident as “a shocking tragedy.”

“Seamus was a decent, hard-working guy, who I knew well,” Cllr Bracken said.

“It’s a shocking blow to the family – a very decent, respectable family.”

Seamus’s funeral details have yet to be announced. May he Rest in Peace.
