Laois farmer elected as chairman of IFA’s national livestock committee

Laois beef farmer Declan Hanrahan from Borris-in-Ossory has been elected as elected Chairman of the IFA’s National Livestock Committee.

Hanrahan was previously vice-chairman of that committee and will head up that sector which includes the livestock chairman from all around the country.

He was elected to succeed Brendan Golden at a meeting of the Committee in the
Irish Farm Centre yesterday. He will begin his term at the Annual General Meeting in January.

He thanked Brendan Golden, who was in this role up to now and will contest for the Connacht regional chairman in the New Year, for his leadership and commitment to the beef and suckler sector during his time as chair of the livestock committee.

“There are significant challenges ahead for our sector and I’m looking forward to
representing all beef farmers on the issues in front of us.

“We are the largest farm enterprise within the farming sector and also a very important part of the rural economy.

“Our focus will be on securing support from Government and the next CAP to sustain the sector,” he said.

Meanwhile, the big election in the IFA is nearing a conclusion with all in-branch voting for the president’s role completed and the postal voting deadline this Monday, December 11.

Laois’s Francie Gorman from Ballinakill is up against Martin Stapleton from Limerick with the count to take place in the Castleknock Hotel in Dublin on Tuesday.
