Sadness following the passing of Camross and Laois hurling great Sean Cuddy

    There is sadness in Camross and the Laois hurling community following the passing of Sean Cuddy.

    Sean died peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on Monday, December 18.

    A renowned hurler, he is the holder of a staggering 16 Laois senior hurling medals.

    He won his first win his club in 1963 and his last in 1986. He was twice part of teams that completed five-in-a-rows.

    Sean captained Camross to win the 1978 title and managed them when his playing days ended.

    He also spent time as Laois senior hurling manager having previously acted as selector.

    Midlands 103’s Jack Nolan paid a lovely tribute to the late Sean following his passing.

    He said: “Sad to hear of the passing of Camross hurling legend Sean Cuddy.

    “‘Big Sean’ as he was affectionately know was a force of nature on and off the pitch.

    “The holder of an incredible 16 senior hurling championship medals he also set a record for top score in a county final with his 3-8 in the 1973 decider.

    “He captained his beloved Camross to the title in 1978 with his prolific scoring feats winning many of his 16 titles.

    “Sean also managed his club and went on to manage Laois taking over from Padraig Horan in 2000 having previously been a selector with both Babs Keating and Pat Critchley.

    “Apart from being a magnificent hurler he was an absolute gentleman off the field and wonderful company to be with when there was never a dull moment.

    “Big Sean will long be remembered when tales are told of the golden era he was part of with the great Camross club.”

    Sean is deeply regretted by his beloved wife Ann, and dear father to Sean Gerard, Fiona, Paula, Alan and Chris, his 12 adoring grandchildren, brothers, sisters, sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, relatives, neighbours and friends.

    He will be reposing on Wednesday afternoon, December 20, from 2pm, concluding with Rosary at 9pm.

    Removal on Thursday morning to St Fergal’s Church, for Requiem Mass at 12 noon, followed by Burial in the adjoining Cemetery.
