2023 Remembered: GRAPHIC CONTENT: Shock as animal carcasses dumped in scenic part of rural Laois

Deer dumped Shaen Hospital (1)

There was huge shock back in January as animal carcasses were dumped in a scenic part of rural Laois.

There was shock in a rural part of Laois this week as the remains of two dead animals were dumped in a popular walking spot.

The grim discovery was made on Tuesday at Shaen – located near Shaen Hospital.

A person was out walking when they came across the carcasses. Initially, it was thought they were the remains of two cows.

But closer inspection actually revealed that they were two deer who had been shot, skinned, drained and then extracted of meat before being dumped.

The eye witness spoke to LaoisToday about the discovery and outlined what happened next.

They said: “When I originally came upon the remains, I actually thought they were two cows.

“There was rope around their hind legs which you would sometimes use if a cow was giving birth.

“However, it was soon clear they were deer and I think the rop had been used to hang them up after they were killed.

“I contacted Laois County Council and spoke to the environment section who subsequently arranged for the remains to be removed.

“I also spoke to the Gardai but there wasn’t much they could do about it.”

The witness also spoke about how this is another example of dumping in rural Ireland.

They said: “The theory is that these deer were shot somewhere else, taken away, skinned and drained before the poachers then removed whatever meat they wanted and dumped the remains here.

“I doubt they were genuine fellas from a gun club who did this because they follow proper procedures so this was most likely done by poachers.

“The smell was absolutely brutal too. It was a very harrowing experiencing for anyone who saw it.

“Dumping is a serious blight on rural Ireland and this is just another example of it.”
