There was great joy on New Year’s Day in Portlaoise Hospital as two babies were born in the very first hours of the new year.
The first baby of the new year – a boy delivered at 12.04am – was born in Dublin’s Rotunda Hospital.
And the first Laois baby wasn’t too far behind as she came into the world 56 minutes later.
Maya was born to delighted parents Alannah Kelly from Portarlington and Leon Lawlor from Stradbally.
She came into the world at 1am on January 1 – making her the first Laois baby born in 2024.
Up next was baby boy Denis of Oksana Suljo and Desmond Rogan from Kildare.
He was born at 11.15am – making him the second baby to be born at the hospital in 2024.
A spokesperson for Portlaoise Hospital congratulated the delighted parents.
They said: “Congratulations and best wishes to the first Laois babies born on New Year’s Day 2024 at the Midland Regional Hospital Portlaoise.”
