Four Laois players set to be involved as 2024 Sigerson Cup to get underway this week

The Sigerson Cup, the premium Third Level football competition, is set to get underway across the country this week.

Round 1 will be played over Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings and four Laois players are set to be involved across three teams.

SETU Carlow, formerly IT Carlow, has the highest representation with two players.

Current Laois senior and Portlaoise midfielder Kevin Swayne will be lining out here.

It is set to be a busy time for him as he will also be in line to play for Laois against Wicklow in the O’Byrne Shield semi final on Saturday.

He is joined on the team by Ballyroan-Abbey’s Conor McWey who represented the Laois U-20s last year.

There is a further Laois connection with the management team as St Joseph’s Mick Dempsey, who led his side to championship glory last year, is in charge.

He is joined by former Killeshin manager Christy Bolger and Carlow’s James Clarke – the latter also forming part of Justin McNulty’s Laois senior management team.

UCD are the most decorated team in the competition with 34 wins and they also have a Laois man in their ranks.

Killeshin and Laois keeper Killian Roche is set to play for them and will hope to make it win number 35.

Meanwhile, Emo’s Sean Greene has been listed on the panel with Maynooth University.

The versatile defender has stepped away from the Laois squad this year but will be in action with the Kildare college.

The competition is run like the Laois senior championship – knock out with a backdoor.
