Call made for traffic calming measures at Laois primary school as warning sounded over problems with ramps

A Laois County Councillor has called for traffic calming measures to be installed at a Laois primary school to slow down vehicles.

Fine Gael Councillor PJ Kelly brought forward the motion at a recent meeting of the Graiguecullen-Portarlington Municipal District in relation to Rath National School, Ballybrittas.

Cllr Kelly wished to see the creation of a school zone area on the public road outside the school.

However, he does not want to see ramps put up as he explained the problems that can occur with these.

He said: “What I wouldn’t really be in favour of is speed ramps because I just take note of one particular school outside Abbeyleix.

“Seven new ramps have been put on that road. I go along with straw or tractor and trailer and cars actually start to overtake me on speed ramps because I have to go real slow.

“In that case there is too many speed ramps.”

Meanwhile, Cllr Kelly also outlined another incident involving ramps that occurred at a funeral.

He said: “A hearse traditionally has a longer wheelbase than any standard car or jeep.

“I was in a guard of honour not too long ago and a hearse got caught on one and we had to lift it to get it off the speed ramp.”

In response to his motion, Senior Executive Engineer, Philip McVeigh said: “Laois County Council will arrange to meet with the Elected Member at this location to review the scope of works required.”
