Borris-in-Ossory NS

Welcome to our school

St Joseph’s NS is a co-educational, Catholic primary school which strives to provide a caring, happy and secure atmosphere where the intellectual, spiritual, physical, moral and cultural needs of our pupils are identified and supported.

While ours is a school with a Catholic ethos, it also has due recognition for all other religions.

Our school has four mainstream classes and two ASD classes. Our staff includes nine teachers (four mainstream, two ASD class and three Special Education Teachers), five SNAs, one secretary and one cleaner.

We strive to create an inclusive environment where all children feel valued and supported.

We offer a wide range of academic activities and learning opportunities for children across all classes. We use programmes such as Literacy Lift Off, Ready Set Go Maths, Stay Safe, and Zones of Regulation alongside the National School Curriculum.

This year, we will also be rolling out the Hot School Meals Scheme which will allow each child in our school to have a free hot meal each school day.

We welcome new initiatives across our school. In the past, we have participated in the new language sampler module, where children from 3rd to 6th class enjoyed weekly French lessons.

This year the children will have German lessons. This is a great opportunity for the children to sample a modern foreign language before they move to secondary school.

Our infants to second class will have lessons with a professional artist who will work in conjunction with the class teachers to produce a visual arts project over six weeks.

Our 3rd to 6th classes enjoyed the benefits of athletics coaching sessions before Christmas and all pupils in the school will receive gymnastics coaching from Portlaoise Gymnastics Academy before Easter. Every child also prepared and performed a school play at Christmas.

Thanks to our close relationship with Borris-in-Ossory/Kilcotton GAA Club, the children in our school have access to weekly coaching sessions in Gaelic football/hurling/camogie.

We were delighted when our boys’ football team captured our first Cumann na mBunscol title in seven years before Christmas, and we are hoping to add a hurling title later in the year.

Swimming lessons are offered to the children in the older classes (3rd-6th) and tin whistle lessons take place every year for 1st to 6th classes.

We enjoy participating in nationwide events such as Maths Week, Science Week, World Book Day, Grandparent’s Day, Intercultural Food Day, and love to enter local competitions such as the Write a Book competition or local quizzes.

Yearly, we enjoy Sports Days, Book Fair Week and school tours. We also encourage our children to take part in charitable work and events and we continue to support Team Hope Shoe Box Appeals, dress up days for Children’s Health Foundation and LOFFA as well as local community fundraisers.

We are a proud to be a Green School and have earned our 6 Green flags since 2004.

The children have worked with teachers and SNAs, our Parents Association and the wider community to create a beautiful garden area in our school.

Our outdoor facilities include a playground, a basketball court/sports hall and a pitch adjacent to the school where we can play sports.
