Derrylamogue National School – a rural school between Rosenallis and Mountmellick, near the Slieve Bloom Mountains – has been named Laois County winner at a national competition.

The children of 3rd and 4th class were crowned Laois champions in the National Disability Authority’s ‘Someone Like Me’ art competition.

It was a huge achievement for the small school, who beat off competition from every other primary school in Laois.

This is an annual competition, hosted by the National Disability Authority (NDA), which promotes awareness of and positive attitudes towards people with disabilities.

This year focussed on both seen and unseen disabilities.

Derrylamogue’s winning theme was “Inclusion for all students at Derrylamogue.”

The children of 3rd and 4th class created a lovely sketch of the school, with children of all abilities playing in various areas of the playground.

The entry included the phrases:

  • ‘Be an includer’
  • ‘We are different but the same’
  • ‘We all belong’
  • ‘Everyone can play’
  • ‘Be Kind’

4th class student, Louis Murphy, 10, represented the school at the presentation ceremony, held in Dubin City Hall.
