Athletics: Successful National Championships for St Abban’s with Fenlon to the fore

National Title and Championship Record for Jack Fenlon

The National U-20 and U-23 Championships kicked off the domestic Indoor season with plenty of St Abban’s athletes making the journey to Athlone to compete.

Jack Fenlon was the stand out performance taking victory in the U-20 1500m, in a Championship Record of 3:51.75.

Jack led from the opening 100m and despite a number of challengers he remained composed to take victory.

His time of 3:51 shaved 3 seconds off the previous Championship Record.

Aoibhin McDonald picked up a bronze medal in the U-20 Pole Vault, with a 2.70m season opener.

Rachel Ayres kicked off her indoor season with a PB of 4:47 in the 1500m.

Katie Baldwin and John Delaney were our other competitors on the day.

Katie jumped 4.26m in the U20 Long Jump and returned later to finish 8th in the Triple Jump with a best of 9.97m.

John Delaney finished 3rd in his heat of the 400m, running 51.77 in the process.

Leinster Intermediate and Masters Cross Country Championships

The Leinster Intermediate and Masters Cross Country Championships were held in miserable conditions in Avondale Co Wicklow on Sunday.

With Storm Isha making its way across the country, there was plenty of wind and rain to welcome the small number of athletes who travelled from the club to Wicklow.

Claire Phelan and Siobhan Burke both battled well in the Masters Women’s race with Siobhan finishing 6th (F45) 18th overall, and Claire 17th (F40) / 41st overall.

In the Master’s 65+ race, Dick Mullins finished 14th overall and 4th in his age category (M70).

The Leinster Juvenile Cross Country Relays were held before the adult races took place.

The Girls U-14 team of Lily O’Neill, Zoe Dunne, Leah Dunphy and Laura Ayres battled the elements to take home the silver medal.

Table Quiz

“Many thanks to all who supported our Table Quiz on Friday last,” the club said.

“It was great to see Behans lounge full with lots of competition between tables. The Dingbat round in particular, caused plenty of deliberations.

“Congratulations to Table No 7, (Tadhg Brennan, Brendan Kealy, Brendan McCormack and Colm Holligan) who took victory on the night with 73 points.

“They beat off competition from 3 Men and a Lady (70 pts) and Quizzy Rascals (69 pts) to claim top spot.

“A huge thank you to all 3 teams who returned their prize money.

“Our raffle was also very generously supported and we are very grateful for that.Thank you to Pauline and her team of correctors and collectors who kept the proceedings moving quickly.

“Also a big thank you to Alan Hartnett, our quizmaster who is growing into the role year on year.

“Finally to all who donated spot prizes and provided refreshments thank you very much.”
