Eight teams set to battle it out to be crowned inaugural LaoisToday Schools QuizCast champion

Here at LaoisToday, we love a good quiz and if the period before Christmas taught us anything – so too do the general Laois public.

Brian Hogan from Courtwood was crowned the inaugural LaoisToday QuizCast champion in December in front of a packed crowd in The Square Bar.

And so, off the back of that, the LaoisToday crew are back with a brand new quiz aimed exclusively at primary school children in the county.

Eight schools have come forward to take part in the LaoisToday Schools QuizCast from the four corners of the county.

Newtown NS (Crettyard), St Colman’s NS (Stradbally), St Joseph’s NS (Borris-In-Ossory), Scoil Bhride (Clonaslee), Rath NS (Ballybrittas), Scoil Mhuire Fatima (Timahoe), The Heath NS and Holy Family Senior School (Portlaoise) have all been chosen to battle it out.

Each team has selected three students who will represent them in the competition.

Every school is guaranteed at least two contests in head-to-head battles – with the four schools set to battle it out in the Dunamaise Arts Centre on Friday, March 1.

Those who win in Round 1 and 2 will go straight to the final with the remaining schools battling it out for the two remaining final places in our Wildcard section.

All rounds aside from the final will be recorded on Zoom and released to the public in Podcast form.

Like the QuizCast, our own Mark Comerford is the quizmaster and will be joined by his assistant Alan Hartnett.

And just like the original quiz, Round 1 will be the Golden Goose round where negative marking will be in operation.

Round 2 is the ‘Home and Away’ questions, where contestants can choose an Irish-based question for one point, or an international question for two.

Round 3, in the opening stage of the competition, is all about capital cities while Round 4 is The List where teams will battle it out penalty shoot-out style to give as many correct answers as possible on a given topic.

As for the fixtures, the first bout sees the children from St Colman’s NS from Stradbally take on those from St Joseph’s NS, Borris-in-Ossory.

The second is a battle between Scoil Bhride Clonaslee and Newtown NS while the third pits Rath NS against Scoil Mhuire Fatima of Timahoe.

The last of the opening contests is a Portlaoise Parish affair as Holy Family will take on The Heath.

The first episode will be available to listen to on Wednesday with three more Round 1 contests broadcast across this week.
