Colleges Camogie: Heywood’s Junior journey ended in Dublin by St Mary’s of Derry

Colleges Camogie All-Ireland Junior ‘C’ Championship Semi Final

Heywoods run in this year’s Junior ‘C’ Camogie championship is over after they were beaten by St Mary’s Magherafelt of Derry.

This game was originally down to be played in Clontarf but the venue had to be switched at the last minute.

When the teams arrived, there were no nets in the goals so everyone had to move to St Pat’s of Drumcondra and throw in was delayed by an hour.

Derry side St Mary’s are the Junior B champions of Ulster and unfortunately for Heywood, this meant that they were very strong.

But Heywood battled bravely throughout and deserved to be closer to their opponents than the final score suggests.

Eimear Murphy flew the flag for them in front of goals for most of the game and hit three points in the first half.

But St Mary’s matched that and also added goals with Eimear Chivers, Ellen Cullen and Ella Rafferty on target.

They led 3-4 to 0-3 at half time and were in a very commanding position.

Heywood never gave up though as Murphy added two more points with Maya Donoghue also pointing.

But St Mary’s were determined to reach the final and sealed it with a late goal from Chivers.

A disappointing end for Heywood but the players and management can be extremely proud of what they achieved.

They end the season with a Leinster title in their cabinet and will hope for more at senior level in the coming years.
