    Rath NS LaoisToday QuizCast Final

Excitement is building in Rath National School ahead of their appearance in the first ever LaoisToday Schools QuizCast final.

The Dunamaise Arts Centre will be the venue for the final which is scheduled for Friday, March 1.

6th class students Aoife Murphy and Michael Nolan plus 5th class student Michael Behan are representing the school – where they will go up against Timahoe, The Heath and St Colman’s, Stradbally.

It has been some journey for Rath to reach this stage as they have taken part in three rounds.

Rath began with a narrow loss to Timahoe but have since defeated Holy Family Portlaoise and Clonaslee to book their place in the Grand Final.

The rounds up to now have been recorded on Zoom, with the students in question relocating to the nearby office of principal Tommy Fitzgerald.

Michael Nolan is 12-years-old and comes from Ballybrittas. Hurling is Michael’s favourite thing to do and he plays with St Paul’s.

Aoife Murphy is also 12 and she lives in Monasterevin. She plays rugby with PortDara Falcons and football with St Conleth’s.

Michael Behan is the youngest member of the team, 11, and he hails from Ballybrittas.

He plays football with St Paul’s and soccer with the Emo Celtic U-12s.

Rath have 194 students in the school with eight mainstream classes, one for each year, and two Autism classes.

The school takes part in a range of sports – GAA, tag rugby, basketball, volleyball, table tennis and athletics.

It is also a school which actively promotes music and works closely with Music Generation Laois.

As regards the quiz, there have been four or five rounds of questions so far but that will change in the Grand Final.

It will have ten rounds including some of the old favourites like ‘Golden Goose’ and ‘The List’ as well as some new rounds which test the contestants’ knowledge across spelling, the Irish language and music.

Rath have improved with every round and will be tough to beat in the final.
