The week that was: Our most read stories of the last seven days

1 – Portlaoise bar and restaurant Lilly’s closes – and expected to be put up for sale

Well-known Portlaoise venue Lilly’s Bar and Kitchen has closed its doors for business – and it’s understood the property is to now be put up for sale.

The Main Street bar and restaurant, which also had a nightclub/late bar, didn’t open over the weekend.

Lilly’s was opened under proprietor Kieran Lillis in the summer of 2018 and had an official opening in October of that year. Former Dublin footballer Bernard Brogan was a partner in the business when it opened.

2 – Sinn Fein adds third candidate to contest Local Elections in Portlaoise Area

Sinn Fein has selected a third candidate to run for the party in the Portlaoise Area at the Local Elections in June.

Jason Phelan, who is from Abbeyleix, will be the third name on the list for the party later this year.

Back in December, the party selected sitting Councilor Caroline Dwane-Stanley to run in Portlaoise alongside newcomer Maria McCormack. 

3 – Vigil to be held tonight in memory of Laois woman who passed away in Dublin

The late Ann Delaney has since been laid to rest. May she Rest in Peace.

Ann Delaney, 47, from Crettyard, was very well known and liked in Dublin and tributes have poured in on social media following news of her passing.

She is the beloved daughter of Mary and the late Tom Delaney and mother to Saoirse.

4 – Laois man and girlfriend set to scale the heights of Kilimanjaro in aid of meningitis research

A Timahoe man and his girlfriend are raising funds for the Meningitis Research Foundation.

Micheál Conlan and Kirsha Rice – students at Maynooth University who work at An Post’s mail centre in Portlaoise to fund their studies – are planning to climb Kilimanjaro as part of a group of students from August 20-27.

5 – The story of the great Pat Critchley set to be told on TG4’s Laochra Gael this Thursday

Laois sporting legend Pat Critchley’s episode on the new series of the popular TG4 series Laochra Gael aired on Thursday night.

The series is an hour-long format and has proved a huge success, bringing each player’s personal stories to screen.

The series features eight Laochra and Pat was the sixth episode – becoming just the second Laois person to feature after Sue Ramsbottom.

6 – The full list of players who have transferred in and out of Laois GAA clubs from other counties in recent months

A total of 38 players have been granted transfers from Laois clubs to clubs in other counties – or indeed countries – in the past four months.

And there have been 22 transfers into Laois clubs in the same time frame – November-February.

The majority of the transfers going out of the county (27 out of 38) have been to clubs outside the country, with most of them to Australia.

7 – Two more candidates enter the Local Election race in Portlaoise

Two new independent candidates have emerged to contest the Local Elections in the Portlaoise Municipal District this June.

Dom Dunne, who ran for Renua in 2019 and came close to winning the final seat on that occasion, is set to run as an independent this time around.

Tommy Mulligan, meanwhile, is also to be on the ballot paper as an independent.

8 – In Pictures: All smiles as Ballylinan celebrate 2023 IFC success with dinner dance

It was all smiles in the Talbot Hotel in Graiguecullen on Saturday night as Ballylinan GAA gathered to celebrate their achievement from 2023.

The team tasted championship glory for the first time in 50 years as they captured the Laois IFC title.

9 – NFL Division 4: Late comeback sees Laois defeat Tipperary and remain in control of the table

A late Laois comeback saw Justin McNulty’s charges emerge from Semple Stadium with their 100% record in Division 4 still in tact.

It wasn’t a vintage performance but it was the type of game that Laois have lost in recent years so they will be delighted to get the victory.

10 – All ladies welcome! – First ever Portlaoise Women’s Shed opens its doors

After plenty of hard work, the first ever Portlaoise Women’s Shed opened its doors earlier this month.

Located at Laois Partnership offices on the Timahoe Road in Portlaoise, the group officially formed on February 14.
