Leinster Juvenile Indoor Championships
TUS Arena, Athlone

The juvenile athletes of St Abban’s AC and St Michael’s AC made the trip to the TUS Arena, Athlone this weekend for Day 1 and 2 of the Leinster Juvenile Indoor Championships.

St Abban’s

There were a huge amount of standout performers across the weekend and the amount of athletes representing St Abban’s  highlighted the fantastic work taking place in the club.

Altogether, 65 athletes proudly represented the club across a wide range of events.

On Day 1, Will Duffy won gold in the Boys U-16 1500m clocking 4:22.

Edon Nimani was the clear winner of the Boys U-16 Shot Putt with an impressive best of 11.62m.

John Delaney picked up the club’s final gold of the day in the Boys U-18 400m.

Cormac Dineen won a silver medal in the Boys U-17 Walk, while Eoghan Mitchell also came away with a silver medal in the High Jump after a clearance of 1.55m a new PB.

In the Girls U-14 60m Lily O’Neil took bronze and the final medal from day 1 came from Elaine Miller in the Long Jump.

The club also had a number of athletes just outside the medals and these athletes will be back over the summer to try and go a few places better.

Day 2 saw another great showing from athletes wearing the green, white and gold of St Abban’s AC.

Joshua Crosby took gold in the Shot Putt with a throw of 12.16m. Adam Kelly also took home a gold medal in the 60m Hurdles.

Lily O Neill also added a gold medal to her bronze from yesterday in the 60m Hurdles.

Shane Kelly claimed a silver medal in the Hurdles. Laura Ayers battled all the way home to claim a silver medal and James O’Mara won the club’s final silver medal on Sunday in the Long Jump.

Roisin Kearney claimed a bronze in the 60m Hurdles while John Delaney added bronze to his gold from yesterday in the 800m.

Once again the club had a host of athletes just outside the medals in the minor places.

Sinéad Fitzpatrick, Josh Delaney, James Hyland, Katie Baldwin, Will Duffy, Adam Kelly, Joseph Lawlor, and Cathal English were unlucky not to medal finishing in 4th place.

St Maichael’s

St. Michael’s were represented by 12 athletes, competing across  15 different events.

Day 1 saw the St. Michael’s athletes compete in 1500m and 60m sprint.

Four athletes ran the 7.5 laps of the 1500m races. In the U-16’s they had Gearóid Mc Cann, Peter Fanning, and Dylan Yarrow.

This was the first time for each of the lads to cover the distance and they will have learned a lot from the day.

The lads got to run in the same heat and their times were Dylan 5:10.14min, Gearóid 5:18.06mins and Peter 5:34.6min.

Shane Maher took part in the U-17 race which was a tactical affair with a big kick over the last two laps. Shane ran 4:37.42min which will also give him something to build on.

St. Michael’s had 3 athletes take on the 60m sprints; Ezn Abbas, Hayley Ryan, and Amelie Milligan.

This was Ezn’s first time to run indoors and he didn’t let the nerves get to him. Ezn started well in the U12 boys race and finished in a really good 9.99sec.

Hayley was also making her debut at the indoors and ran a very good 9.77sec in the U-13 race.  Hayley is an excellent multisport athlete and will have enjoyed this. Amelie was out in the U-14 girls.

Amelie was one place away from making the semi-final, but can be happy with her run.

Day 2 saw St. Michael’s athletes take on the 800m, 60mH and Long Jump.

St. Michael’s had Siobhán O’Loughlin, Hanna Luttrel, Shane Maher, Amelie Milligan, and Cian Twomey take on one of the toughest track races, the 800m.

Cian was St. Michael’s first athlete to take on the 800m in the U-14 boys race. Cian ran a very steady race in his first ever 800m, finishing in a time of 2:52.66mins.

Amelie and Hanna ran in the U-14 800m. This was the first race in a busy weekend for Amelie and she ran well finishing just outside her pb in a time of 2:57.86min.

Hanna had another good run qualifying for the final with a two second pb 2:30.71min.

In the final Hanna ran a very smart race making her way through the field finishing 8th with another pb 2:30.61min.

Siobhán ran a really good heat to finish as the quickest of the non-automatic qualifiers in a time of 2:31.85min.

In the final Siobhán ran a brave race moving through the field from 9th to 5th and finished in a pb time 2:30.48.

Amelie Milligan took on the 60mH as her second event of the day. In the heats Amelie ran brilliantly to make the final as one of the non-automatic qualifiers in a time of 10.79sec.

In the final Amelie pushed hard and finished in a PB time of 10.61sec.

Patience Chinda took part in the U-18 Long Jump. Over the past year Patience has excelled in the Triple Jump but with the absence of this event over the weekend Patience was happy to take part in the Long jump and finished 6th overall with a distance of 5.04m.

The majority of our athletes only finished their cross country season last week and this left them little time to prepare for the indoors, which makes their performances all the more impressive.
