Two students from Portlaoise CBS were crowned the overall winners at the Laois Student Enterprise Awards on Tuesday afternoon.

Johnny Phelan and David Reddin impressed the judges with their business ‘Steady Wine’.

They made handcrafted personalised wooden holders for bottles and glasses as well as a Gravity bottle holder.

They just finished ahead of Scoil Chriost Ri students Helen Oshinowo, Iris Shyju, Kim Ly Fitzpatrick and Leah Byrne.

Their company, ‘Book Cycle’, upcycled keepsakes and bookcrafts made from secondhand books.

Third place in the Senior category went to ‘Paws the Moment’ by Andrew Coyne, Tom Delaney, David Kehoe and Jack Fennell.

The lads, also from Portlaoise CBS, created personalised frames which display clay pet pay prints.

The Junior Level Award went to ‘Via’s Jewellery’ by Olivia Przepiora from Portlaoise College which created unique resin earrings.

‘Eternity’ by Amina Adnan from Portlaoise College created long lasting perfume made with natural ingredients and she was crowned the Intermediate winner.

Seven further awards were given out on the day with the Commercial Viability Special Merit Award Winner going to ‘Deja Brew’.

Emilia Dziedzic, Anna Murphy, Amber Kelly, Heather Homan and Amy Bambrick from Portlaoise College all ran this company and it was an eco-friendly school coffee shop.

‘XVI’ by Holly Carroll, also from Portlaoise College, was named as the ‘One To Watch’.

She created bracelets that highlight a medical condition in case of an accident or contact details for someone with dementia if they got lost – or if a child got lost.

‘CMC’ (Custom Made Crafts) by Miriam Senior, Caoimhe Dunne and Callum Drea from Mountrath Community School also won an award.

They scooped the Marketing and Promotion Special Merit Award for their custom made tote bags.

‘Cuppa Creations’ by Moya Keating, Ruby Dempsey and Georgia Garcia from Dunamase College won the Sustainability Special Merit Award for their handpainted drinkware including mugs and glasses.

The R&D Special Merit Award Winner was ‘LipLab Cosmetics’.

This was a cosmetic business making lip balms and lip gloss by Mountmellick Community School students Sorcha Hartnett and Isabella De Leca.

Scoil Chriost Ri students Clodagh Fingleton, Áine Nolan, Kayleigh Dunne and Shauna Lalor won the Business Acumen Special Merit Award for ‘Frame It’ which produced personalised frames.

And the final award went to Scoil Chriost Ri students Anna Mulligan and Sarah Corrigan for ‘Woodland Snowmen’.

They won the Sales and Marketing Special Merit for their festive wooden snowmen.

Cllr Paschal McEvoy, Cathaoirleach of Laois County Council and Linda Meredith, Local Enterprise Office Laois, were on hand to present the prizes to the winners.

Photographer Alf Harvey was present at the finals yesterday and captured some great images.
