Major works to be carried out on two protected structures in Laois

Laois County Council have given the go-ahead for works to be carried out on two protected structures in the county, including one of Laois’s main landmarks.

Firstly, the Commissioners of Public Works were awarded permission to begin conservation works on the roof structures and façade of Emo Court House.

The project will include reinstatement of the original south elevation, installation of new zinc roof deck closely following the original design, renewal of flat roof structures and the conservation of existing steel windows.

There will also be renewal of the natural copper on the 19th-century dome.

The project will see reinstatement of original roof pitches and profiles to the east and west wing roofs, along with the renewal of all natural slate and subsidiary roof coverings.

Two automatic opening vents to the east wing and central flat roofs will be installed along with a new lead weathering over the parapet and projecting stone cornices.

Conservation works will take place on façade fabric, including repairs to high-level stonework, such as decorative stone cornices, corbelling, friezes and column capital.

The semi-circular balustrade over the eastern elevation will be repaired, along with removal of inappropriate cementitious render and conservation of chimney stacks.

Capard House, Rosenallis will also undergo works, with the construction of a steel-framed, roofed structure.

The structure will measure 33 metres by 15 metres and will enclose the existing equestrian sand arena, incorporating changing room and storage facilities.

The proposed use for the structure which is a multi-sport indoor arena – including equestrian, indoor running track, roller skating, and gymnastics – for use by the owners and guests on a non-commercial, recreational, health and fitness basis.
