1 – Electric Picnic announcement due ‘soon’ as speculation mounts over line-up

The 2024 Electric Picnic is just over four months away and although we haven’t had an announcement, organisers say that fans afraid the festival won’t go ahead can fear no more.

LaoisToday confirmed this week that organisers, despite not having an actual date, have said that an announcement on the line-up will come ‘soon’.

2 – Laois ladies football management step aside – with replacement confirmed

LaoisToday had some big BREAKING NEWS this week, reporting that the Laois ladies senior football management team had stepped aside.

Tom Devereaux and Billy Kiernan abruptly end their tenure having been appointed late last year to replace Donie Brennan.

3 – Young Laois person described as ‘the very definition of quiet leadership’ honoured at Garda Youth Awards

A young person from Laois has been honoured at the 2024 Laois/Offaly Garda Divisional Youth Awards, held in the Killeshin Hotel in Portlaoise.

Matty Doyle from Youth Work Ireland in Portlaoise received an individual award, recognising his years of hard work and dedication to his community.

4 – Young Laois volunteer honoured at Garda Youth Awards for dedication to helping her community

Rachel Fennelly of Laois Civil Defence also received individual recognition at the Garda Youth Awards for her dedication to building up the skills to help her local community.

The Garda Youth Awards recognise the outstanding achievement of young people between the ages of 13 and 21, who have undertaken exceptional work in their local communities or who have shown great determination in their own lives.

5 – Order of Malta Cadets honoured at Garda Youth Awards for their commitment and community spirit

Ciara Long and Evie Friel, cadets at the Order of Malta, Portlaoise, received a group award at the Garda Divisional Youth Awards in the Killeshin Hotel.

The cadets were recognised for their commitment and community spirit in joining the organisation.

It’s all going to plan so far in 2024 for the Laois hurlers with promotion to Division 1B and a Division 2A trophy in the bag, but there’s plenty more to come.

7 – The 2 Johnnies announce competition to give local bands opportunity to perform at Electric Picnic

We are less than 20 weeks away from the beginning of Electric Picnic and still, despite requests to the organisers, we have no line-up announcement – not even a date for one.

However, thanks to The 2 Johnnies, we may have at least one act performing this year.

9 – Rainbow Gathering could make sensational return to Rosenallis more than 30 years on from first historic visit

On August 25, 1993 a group of ‘Rainbow Gatherers’ came from all over Europe to share in peace and love in secluded part of the Slieve Bloom Mountains, drawing massive national media attention.

Now, 31 years later, the Irish Rainbow Gathering Group say they are exploring the idea of recreating the iconic gathering in Rosenallis.

10 – Laois becoming a hot-bed of darts – one of Ireland’s fastest growing sports

Darts, the sport that everybody loves for a week at Christmas, is currently on the rise across Ireland, with Laois fast becoming a hot-bed of the game.

Laois had a quarter-final win over Leitrim and a semi-final win over Louth earlier this year to reach the 2024 All-Ireland Shield Final.
