Talented Portarlington student wins national trad competition

Fionn Connolly, a student of Colaiste Iosagain in Portarlington, has won a national traditional music competition with his music group ‘Alta’.

The music competition ‘Siansa Gael Linn’ is one of the most prestigious in the country for Irish traditional music.

Fionn is described as an incredibly talented musician with Portlaoise Comhaltas and a humble young lad who is very well liked by fellow students and teachers alike.

The competition provides a platform for talented young music groups who are given the guidance from highly traditional regarded musicans along the way.

If you’d like to see Fionn showcase his talent he is preforming in the Big Busk fundraiser in Portalington on Friday, April 19, from 10am to 1.30pm.

He will be playing along with some of his fellow school members outside Supervalu with all proceeds going to Focus Ireland.

Joining Fionn in the ‘Big Busk’ are brothers Eamon and Tom Hudson plus Cillian Murphy.

They are members of Comhaltas in Portarlington. Although they will be competing at the upcoming Fleadh Ceoil, they will join forces on Friday in aid of Focus Ireland.

They will be joined by 20 other students outside Supervalu Portarlington.

Participating in this group are Holly Glass and Matthew Ryan (pictured above). The school participated in the ‘Big Busk’ for the first time last year where the students raised over  €1,000.
