1 – Gardai make arrests after ‘sophisticated illicit pill making facility’ discovered in Laois

Gardai made two arrests in the last few days following the discovery of what they say is a ‘sophisticated illicit pill making facility’ in Laois.

They seized €200,000 worth of cash and a large amount of drugs at a facility believed to have been located in the Rathdowney area.

2 – ‘Don’t let the fear of cancer and chemo stop you from seeking help’ – Laois woman on ‘silent disease’

A Ballybrittas woman shared her experience of bowel cancer this week in a bid to increase awareness of the second most common of all cancers in men and the third most common of all cancers in women in this country.

Jennifer Deegan, a 45-year-old solo parent of a son and a daughter, aged seven and ten, provides emotional support to victims of crime and their families in the criminal courts.

3 – Late Adam Kirwan remembered as GAA President pays special visit to Mountrath Community School

Monday last was a proud day for the students and staff of Mountrath Community School as they welcomed GAA President Jarlath Burns to the school for a special visit.

This visit was in recognition of the ‘Gold Award’ that the school’s Transition Year GAA Future Leaders Programme received this year as a result of their excellent work.

There is great sadness in Mountmellick following the death of Eithne Burns the town’s retired Postmistress, who served in the role for a long number of years.

There has been an enormous outpouring of sympathy for Ms Burns and her family, with numerous people paying tribute.

A Laois band have been chosen to take part in a brand new RTE TV show which is set to air later this year.

Coolboy, who formed last October, are set to feature in the programme called ‘An Ghig Mhór’.

6 – Three Laois students receive All-Ireland scholarships to cover duration of their studies

Three Laois students have been awarded an All Ireland Scholarship which will cover the full duration of their undergraduate studies.

Jessica Gill, Stanislaw Walkowiak and Niamh Conroy were honoured at the All Ireland Scholarships Awards Ceremony on March 30 in University Concert Hall, University of Limerick.

7 – Green Party confirm two more candidates to contest Local Elections in Laois

The Green Party have announced that two more candidates will contest for a County Council seat at the Local Elections in June.

Last year, Ballinakill native Rosie Palmer announced she would run in the Portlaoise area.

8 – Joe McDonagh Cup: Purcell the hero as Laois come from six points down to defeat Offaly

Laois made a winning start to the Joe McDonagh Cup as they came from behind to defeat Offaly in O’Moore Park.

Paddy Purcell was the hero as his two second half goals helped turn a six point deficit into a three point win.

9 – Colleges Football: Lalor holds his nerve as Mountmellick CS are crowned Leinster 2nd Year champions

Mountmellick Community School were crowned 2nd Year Leinster ‘D’ champions this week following a pulsating final in Kildare.

Colaiste Chilliain of Dublin were their opponents and they pushed the Laois school all the way.

10 – Leinster Colleges Senior ‘B’ Hurling League Final: Quinn and Shortall goals the difference for Heywood

Heywood were crowned Leinster Colleges Senior B hurling league champions this week following victory over Castlecomer CS this afternoon.

Second half goals from Eli Quinn and Eoin Shortall did the trick for the Laois school as they came from behind to win by five.
