Wholesale changes and championship debuts as Laois team named for Carlow Tailteann Cup clash

The Laois senior football team to face Carlow in Round 1 of the Tailteann Cup has been named.

Laois senior football manager Justin McNulty has made wholesale changes to the side which were beaten by Offaly in the Leinster championship a month ago.

As we knew, corner backs James Kelly (suspension) and Ben Dempsey (broken arm) miss out.

While five more players who started the defeat to Offaly now find themselves on the bench.

Shaun Fitzpatrick, Paul Kingston, Jack Lacey, Damon Larkin and Kieran Lillis are all among the substitutes.

Into the team come Dylan Kavanagh, Brian Byrne, Simon Fingleton, Mikie Dempsey, Conor Heffernan, Rioghan Murphy and Niall Dunne.

Kavanagh forms part of a new look full back line with Stradbally’s Eoin Buggie wearing number three and Mark Timmons in the corner.

Seamus Lacey has moved to form a new half back line alongside the returning Brian Byrne and championship-starting debutante Simon Fingleton.

Laois have a brand new midfield too with Mikie Dempsey also making his championship debut alongside Conor Heffernan.

The half forward line sees the least amount of change as Eoin Lowry and Kevin Swayne remain but they are now joined by Mark Barry.

While captain Evan O’Carroll has two new partners with championship-starting debuts in store for Rioghan Murphy and Niall Dunne.
