The Manchester United Supporters Club in Carlow set to celebrate their 50th anniversary

Carlow’s Manchester United Supporters Club, which contains many supporters from Laois, are set to celebrate their 50th anniversary on June 8.

Treble winners Denis Irwin and Wes Brown plus stadium announcer Alan Keegan are travelling over for the event as the oldest supporters club in Ireland celebrate the milestone.

The event is in the Talbot Hotel Carlow where the former players will meet and greet the members of the club.

The Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup will be on display for photographs.

The first groups to travel over to Old Trafford from Carlow date back as far as 1971.

However, the official founding of the supporters club was in 1974 when the Carlow Committee contacted Man United with a request to form an official affiliated supporters club.

Groups from Carlow continued to travel overseas but could now purchase tickets directly from United.

Over the years the club continued to grow, in 1984 the club organised their first official trip to Old Trafford where they presented a plaque to Kevin Moran, the Carlow Branch Player of the Year.

In 1993, the club had grown to 190 members and in 1995 the club bought two season tickets for the first time.

1999 was the year in which the club celebrated their 25th anniversary.

They held a dinner dance in commemoration, first team player Wes Brown was in attendance. Manchester United also made the Premier League trophy available for the evening.

The Club held their 35th anniversary in 2010. United players Nani and Darron Gibson represented the club and again, the Premier League Trophy made an appearance in Carlow that night.

Along with the 50th anniversary Carlow Manchester United Supporters Club are watching the FA Cup final in the Barracks on May 25 at 3pm.

Tickets for the event can be accessed here with proceeds going to Éist Cancer Support and The Irish Guide Dogs.

The group also thanked their sponsors Tile n Style, Abbey Fiberglass, Entertainyou.ie and Talbot Hotel Carlow.
