‘The biggest concern is that lorries are being diverted past the school’ says local Councillor, calling for company to ‘liaise with local people’

Calls have been made for Roadstone Management to liaise with local people in the vicinity of the company’s site in Laois “in the interest of Health and Safety for all”.

Fianna Fáil Cllr Padraig Fleming raised the issue at the April meeting of the Graiguecullen-Portarlington Municipal District earlier this week.

Cllr Fleming called on Laois County Council to “meet with Roadstone Management with the view to them funding the widening of the roads in designated areas to and from the Ballyadams Quarry.

“The biggest concern is that lorries are being diverted past the school,” he said.

Independent Cllr Aisling Moran supported the motion, saying “kids can’t even go for a cycle; people can’t go for walks”.

In response, Mr Philip McVeigh, Senior Executive Engineer said:

“Laois County Council can liaise with Roadstone regarding funding and installation of passing bays in designated areas following the receipt and approval of the designated locations.”

Cllr Fleming also asked that the Council “pipe the collapsed drain at Ballyrahin, Ballickmoyler,” saying the water was flowing out onto the road.

Mr McVeigh said the Council would arrange for these works “in the coming weeks.”

Cllr Fleming concluded by calling for the Council to cut the hedge “opposite the entrance to Fruithill Court Estate, on the Numbers Road, Graiguecullen.”

Mr McVeigh again responded, saying the Council would first “assess this location with a view to the issuing of a hedge-cutting notice as required.”
