Bus stops confirmed for Castletown as requests for more made in other areas

Castletown General

Laois County Council has signalled their intention to construct and erect bus stops in Castletown.

The response came following a query from Independent Councillor James Kelly on the matter.

Senior Engineer Diarmuid Donohue said: “A Road Safety Audit has been completed for the new bus stops in Castletown.

“Consent will now be sought from the NTA to proceed with the scheme ahead of completing procurement and appointing a contractor.”

Mr Donohue also confirmed that these bus stops would be in the village which was welcomed by Cllr Kelly.

Cllr John King requested the same for Rathdowney while Cllr Ollie Clooney asked for Ballacolla and Durrow to be looked after.

Cllr Clooney said: “Children are back in school now and it is terrible to see them standing with rain on their coats.

“I know building bus shelters and bike sheds costs a lot in Dublin, but we are only looking for something small.”

In a second motion, Cllr Kelly asked that Laois County Council carry out road and footpath remedial safety works at the Shannon Street/Shannon Road Junction in Mountrath ‘in the interest of road safety for all’.

He said: “The current situation is very unsafe. The footpath is too small and narrow.”

Senior Engineer Rory O’Callaghan said: “The remedial works requires the setback of an existing Council house boundary wall.

“Consent has been given by the Housing Department to survey the property and prepare a design for their review and comment prior to works being carried out.

“These works have been included in the 2025 Safety Improvement Works in Regional and Local Roads Applications.”
