‘Snowman Killer’ wreaking havoc across Portlaoise as children ‘left in tears’

A bizarre situation unfolded throughout Portlaoise recently as a man carried out several acts of destruction – on snowmen.

An individual calling himself the ‘Snowman Killer’ has been driving around the town systematically destroying snowmen and snowomen.

Following a week of snow and freezing temperatures, large parts of Ireland have been beautifully decorated with snowmen, snowomen, igloos and all manner of icy creations.

With most of the county’s children enjoying an unexpected extra week off school, children of all ages have been entertaining themselves by getting out and frolicking in the snow – a rare luxury here in Ireland.

But in recent days, one individual has taken it upon himself to play the role of a Batman villain crossed with The Grinch.

On a YouTube channel called ‘David Ire’, the host appears in a video entitled “Do You Want to Build a Snowman?”

In the video, the host shows himself driving around Portlaoise knocking over and kicking snowmen as he proudly proclaims himself ‘The Snowman Killer.’

Many of these attacks were carried out in people’s front gardens.

Bringing the issue to the attention of LaoisToday a local resident outlined how children have been left distraught.

They said: “For some children, this were their first snowman.

“I saw the son of my neighbour crying in the morning because of this, and this is heart-breaking.

“Some of these snowmen were located in front of private property … He also entered the Carry-Out Off License car park to destroy a fancy and elaborate snowman.

“That is a total nonsense and a lack of respect, especially because he posted everything on YouTube, bragging he is the snowman killer.”

While Portlaoise Independent County Councillor Tommy Mulligan strongly condemned the actions.

“This individual is way out of line,” Cllr Mulligan said.

“Children and families have been out enjoying the snow and making memories building these snowmen. A lot of time and effort goes into it.

“The last thing a child wants to see is somebody destroy their creative work.

“We all love a bit of craic but this fella has crossed the line; somebody needs to confront him and tell him to wise up.

“No body has any right to be encroaching on people’s property and certainly not to be damaging people’s property – it’s totally out of order.”
