Status Orange warning announced as Storm Éowyn to batter the country on Friday

Storm Eowyn

Met Eireann has issued a Status Orange wind warning for the entire country as Storm Éowyn is set to batter the country on Friday.

The storm, which is currently forming in the Gulf of Mexico, is set to charge across the Atlantic Ocean and barrel into Ireland from the early hours of Friday morning.

A deep low pressure and an extraordinarily powerful Jet Stream will mix together to super charge the storm.

The warning will be in place from 2am on Friday morning and remain in place until 5pm on Friday.

Gale force southerly winds becoming westerly “will bring severe, damaging and destructive winds,” Met Éireann said, with gusts of up to 130km/h and even higher for a time.

Impacts will include fallen trees, damage to power lines and power outages, structural damage, very difficult travelling conditions, disruption and cancellations to transport, and wave overtopping.

Alan O’Reilly from Carlow Weather described Storm Eowyn as “the worst storm we have seen in years”.

He says the storm could be as bad as Storm Ophelia in October 2017.

He said: “This looks like the most significant storm I’ve seen on weather forecasting models since probably Ophelia.

“I’m not saying it’ll be as bad as Ophelia for some areas, but it could be. There is a possibility that it will be close to that, where the strongest of the winds come into the southwest or the west.

“Obviously as this storm hasn’t even developed fully yet, tracking it and the exact track will change.

“So I’d imagine Met Éireann will be updating and possibly upgrading.”
