From Puck to Putt – Laois Hurlers Golfing Society’s new season teeing off at Mountrath Golf Club

It is that time of year again as the Laois Hurlers Golfing Society prepare to get their season underway, teeing off at Mountrath Golf Club, on Saturday May 10.

First tee is reserved from 9am to 10.30am and will set in motion the first of three outings the Society stage each year.

The Captain’s Prize takes place in July and the group conclude with a Hamper Outing on the October Bank Holiday weekend.

Philip Monnelly was elected Captain for 2025 and the club wish him well for the year ahead.

The Laois Hurlers Golfing Society dates back to the early seventies with the aim of continuing contact amongst former players, maintaining links between present day hurlers and those that have hung up their boots.

It is open to all, with new members of all golfing standards welcome. Annual membership is €20 and each outing cost €20.

To become a member, you need to have played hurling at any level, but must be a current member of a golf club and hold a GUI handicap.

Within the Society the most sought-after prize is undoubtedly the Ollie Fennell Trophy in honour of the Clonad and Laois legend who was a long-time member. This trophy is awarded to the player with the best overall score over a set number of outings.

Members of the society also have the opportunity of participating in All Ireland Hurlers events run by the Na hIománaithe Golfing Society.

They stage three outings, the highlight of the season being an inter-county team event in early September.

If you wish to join the Laois Hurlers Golfing Society and wish to play, please contact either Alex Stenson on 086-2570757 or Timmy Williams on 087-2885249; alternatively turn up on the day.
