A Laois men’s shed continues to go from strength to strength as a core group in their community.
Knock Vintage Men’s Shed began as a group formed to raise money for the local national school.
From there, they became a dedicated vintage club and now have also evolved into a men’s shed with nearly 30 members.
It is a men’s shed in name only, however, as their doors are open to women as well.
The group leased and restored the curate’s house of Knock Chapel which they made their base, adding a workshop, a greenhouse and a garden.
Aided by grant funding, the group are adding solar panels and an auto mower next week.
Mr Niall Headen, Secretary of Knock Vintage Men’s Shed, the group are “turning the corner” when it comes to finding a balance between sustainability and enjoyment.
“It’s all about the banter, having a chat, and learning new skills from each other,” he said.
Mr Headen thanked Clár and Laois County Council, saying how grateful the group are for their help and support.
Tutors Andy Fleming and Michael McGrath share their expertise at wood turning, while Pat Bowe oversees the group’s repairs on vintage machinery.
The Men’s Shed recently hosted special-guest members of the Laois Rings team at the Rings Ireland exhibition.
Laois Rings specialise is the game of ringboard, a popular pastime in men’s sheds across Ireland and beyond.
