Fifth and Sixth Class students from Scoil Bhride in Mountrath were honoured at the Young Filmmaker of the Year awards recently.
At the start of April, students travelled to the Omniplex Cinema in Limerick for the Junior finals of the competition.
Scoil Bhríde’s short film ‘Grannie’s Revenge’ was shortlisted from over a hundred entries, from all corners of Ireland, to be screened at the finals.
The journey to Limerick started a number of years ago when Ms Michelle Pearson applied for Scoil Bhríde to be part of Creative Schools.
Aideen McHugh came to the school to facilitate lots of different workshops and the girls were given different opportunities to work creatively.
It was from this work that the students decided they had a particular interest in film.
As a result, last September Lee Williamson of Shuttermanic Productions started working on film making with all of the students.
Time was spent learning about storyboards, shot lists, interview skills, filming equipment, sound effects and much more. It was at this point that the story of ‘Grannie’s Revenge’ was born.
When asked about the experience they gained from the filmmaking workshops the students’ gave some of the following quotes: “It was an unforgettable experience.” “I love acting even more now.” “The whole experience has encouraged me to try out more film making.”
Scoil Bhríde have enjoyed continued success with the film ‘Grannie’s Revenge’. Last December, they were awarded second place at the ‘Roscommon Mini Motion Pictures Film Festival’ where they won ten Samsung tablets.
Principal of Scoil Bhríde, Ms Mary Rohan said that being shortlisted for the finals in Limerick was a huge achievement for the school and hopes that this experience will inspire lots more filmmaking at Scoil Bhríde in the future.
