Two Laois students have won the Irish final of the European Money Quiz and will now go on to represent Ireland at the continental finals in Brussels later this month.
Jodie Komolafe and Richelle Alexander, third-year students at Scoil Chriost Ri, Portlaoise, beat competition from over 2,000 Irish students to book their place in the final, which will be held in the Belgian capital on Friday, May 23.
The European Money Quiz is Europe’s largest financial education competition which aims to promote financial literacy among 13-15 year old students.
The live European finals in Brussels will see teams of two from 30 countries playing directly against each other in a bid to become champions of Europe and share in a prize fund of €5,000 for their school.
Seán Smyth, Principal of Scoil Chríost Rí said: “Understanding money and finance is a critical life skill for young people and financial education plays a key role in our school here in Portlaoise.
“We actively encourage students to develop their financial literacy in meaningful and engaging ways and the European Money Quiz is a highlight each year as its live online format makes learning about finance interactive, relevant, and fun.
“We’re especially proud of Jodie and Richelle for their fantastic achievement, and the whole school is behind them as they prepare to compete in the Brussels finals later this month.”
The European Money Quiz is part of European Money Week (EMW), a joint initiative between the European Banking Federation and 30 banking associations across Europe.
One such association is the Banking and Payments Federation Ireland (BPFI), whose Chief Executive Brian Hayes said:
“Jodie and Richelle have done incredibly well to make it through to the European stage – a real testament to their knowledge and hard work.
“We hope their success will encourage even more students to get involved next year and showcase their skills in business and finance.”
