A nine-year-old girl from Laois is preparing to undertake a 1km swim in a bid to raise funds for the Irish Cancer Society.
Sadhbh O’Mahony from Killenard will be swimming on Sunday, June 8, in memory of her grandparents, Bríd and Ger O’Mahony.
The swim takes place on the weekend after Ger’s second anniversary.
Sadhbh’s grandparents were popular figures in Mountmellick for decades.
Ger O’Mahony owned a butcher’s shop in the town for many years before later becoming a supervisor with Laois County Council.
He was closely associated with Mountmellick GAA club, as a hurler, a footballer, and a variety of roles off the pitch.
Ger passed away in June, 2023. Three months later his wife Bríd followed him.
Bríd was a long-time teacher in Mountmellick Community School.
Sadhbh has already raised over €1,000 and those who wish to donate can do so on her Just Giving page.
Sadhbh is in third class in Scoil Naomh Eoin, Killenard, and is a member of the Piranhas swimming club in Portarlington, with some of her swimming friends ready to support her during the swim.
Her parents Donnchadh, from Mountmellick, and Fiona, from Roslea, County Fermanagh, said they family would like to raise as much as they can for a charity that “helps and supports so many who have been impacted by this very cruel disease.”
