A Laois Senator has been appointed to a position on two new Oireachtas Committees
Sinn Féin’s Maria McCormack has been added to the Committee on Housing, Local Government and Heritage, Chaired by Fine Gael TD Micheál Carrigy.
The committee shadows the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage.
Senator McCormack will also form part of the Committee on Social Protection, Rural, and Community Development, Chaired by another Fine Gael TD, John Paul O’Shea.
The Committee scrutinises the work of the Department of Social Protection and Department of Rural and Community Development and their respective agencies, and examines expenditure, policy related aspects and EU matters.
Outlining her goals for the Committees, Senator McCormack said she would be focusing on the housing crisis, supports for carers and people with disabilities, and fair access to social welfare.
This is the Laois Senator’s first term in office and she welcomed the news, saying she was “delighted to be nominated to the Housing and Social Protection Committees at a time of real opportunity and change.”
Senator McCormack said: “Sinn Féin are ready to get down to business and work hard to deliver for workers, families, and communities.
“Tackling the housing crisis, improving supports for carers and people with disabilities, and ensuring fair access to social welfare are just some of the key priorities I’ll be focusing on.”
Senator McCormack also said she would be “holding the Government to account on the issues that matter most.”
I’ll be working as part of a strong, all-Ireland Sinn Féin team to bring the voices of Laois into the Seanad, ensure the interests of ordinary people are put first, and help build a better, fairer, united Ireland.
