Portlaoise College has announced the launch of a new community-funded initiative aimed at supporting access to third-level education.
The McAleese Ozanam Access Scholarship will provide “significant financial assistance” to one “deserving” student to help meet the costs of a four-year undergraduate degree.
The scholarship will be presented by the former President of Ireland and current Chancellor of Trinity College Dublin, Mary McAleese.
The scholarship offers an initial award of up to €4,000 in the first year, with continued financial support in subsequent years.
Funds will be disbursed in three instalments annually, in August, November, and February.
In addition to financial support, the recipient will also benefit from “ongoing guidance throughout their college journey.”
Students interested in applying are invited to submit a short essay entitled ‘Roots and Wings: Me and My Educational Journey’, reflecting on their background, school experience, future ambitions, and course of interest.
The deadline for submissions is Tuesday, May 13, at 5pm.
Speaking about the launch, Principal Noel Daly said: “This scholarship reflects our school’s deep commitment to equity and opportunity.
“We believe in supporting our students not just through school, but into further education and brighter futures.”
The scholarship also encourages continued connection with the school community, with recipients expected to share their experiences during College Awareness Week and maintain academic engagement throughout their degree.
