Mountrath CS 3-19 Coláiste Abhainn Rí Callan 1-19 (AET)
Leinster Colleges ‘B’ 2nd Year Hurling Final
Mountrath Community School have been crowned Leinster 2nd Year ‘B’ hurling champions following victory over Callan this afternoon.
In an epic encounter in Johnstown, extra time was required to separate the teams in the end.
The side, coached by Trumera’s Bryan Bredin and Tipperary natives Diarmuid Maher and John O’Meara, ran out six point winners in the end.
Mountrath were North Leinster champions in March when they disposed of the challenge of Clane in that final.
They had a six week wait for this final game and made a good start to lead 0-9 to 0-6 at half time.
A goal from Camross’ Darragh Mortimer in the second half kept the momentum going but Callan came back and full time ended with the sides deadlocked at 1-15 apiece.
But Mountrath found an extra gear in the additional periods as Castletown’s Luke Delaney rattled the net in the first half of it to give Mountrath the advantage – 2-18 to 1-18.
Camross’s Ryan Guilfoyle goaled in the second period of extra time to ensure that Mountrath were champions with six points to spare.
There were excellent displays all over the pitch with joint captain, Borris-Kilcotton’s Paudi Fahy, excelling at full back.
Tadhg Lowry of Camross was a rock at centre back where he read the game extremely well.
His clubmate Darragh Mortimer was a driving force in midfield and chipped in with some fine points also.
While fellow Camross man Ryan Guilfoyle, who is a year younger than most of his teammates and opponents, was deadly accurate on frees.
Castletown’s Luke Delaney and Ballyfin’s Ben Heffernan also gave maximum efforts and harried for every ball that came their way.
Well done to all involved and we look forward to seeing what this team can achieve as the years go on.
