Ten schools across Portlaoise have been honoured for their achievements in promoting active and sustainable travel at the Portlaoise Schools Cluster Project Awards, held in the Dunamaise Arts Centre.

The event marked the successful conclusion of the first year of the Portlaoise Schools Cluster Project, a two-year initiative led by Green-Schools An Taisce and supported by Laois County Council’s Climate Action Section.

The programme aims to reduce reliance on the private car for the school journey, and to normalise walking, cycling, and other active modes of transport among young people.

All ten mainstream primary and secondary schools in Portlaoise took part in the initiative, making it one of the most ambitious and collaborative Green-Schools Travel Theme programmes to date.

The project was made possible through sponsorship and coordination by Laois County Council, whose Climate Action Section recognised the need for a joined-up, town-wide approach to school travel.

Chief Executive of Laois County Council, Michael Rainey, addressed the audience, praising the project as “a powerful example of strategic partnership in action” and confirming that the Council will support the programme into its second year.

He highlighted several complementary sustainable transport initiatives being rolled out in the town such as the newly established cycle training area and bike library in the People’s Park, the first of its kind in the county, designed to support accessible cycle training for schools.

Cathaoirleach of Laois County Council, Padraig Fleming, congratulated all schools involved and acknowledged the leadership of school principals and Green-Schools coordinators.

He said: “When we work with young people and give them a voice, we not only support learning—we help build a healthier, safer town for everyone.”

The event included a video showcase of school activities, award presentations, and a celebration lunch.

Travel officers Chiara Hanrahan and Michele Castiaux were acknowledged for their central role in guiding and delivering the programme locally.

The Portlaoise Schools Cluster Project has not only influenced travel habits but created lasting enthusiasm for sustainability and health among the town’s youngest citizens.
