A young Laois woman is embarking on a journey to South Africa with the mission of making a positive change in the lives of children.
Cara Phelan, from Portlaoise, will be heading to Port Elizabeth in August where she will be teaching English language lessons and coaching sports, empowering the children with essential skills and confidence.
“I believe that education and sports can transform lives and provide opportunities for a brighter future,” Cara said.
“I’ve always had a strong desire to make a positive impact, especially in the lives of young people. I believe that every child deserves opportunities to grow, learn, and feel supported – regardless of where they’re born.
“Volunteering abroad felt like a way to step outside my comfort zone, challenge myself, and contribute to something meaningful while also learning from a different culture.”
Cara, who is currently studying for a Bachelor degree in English, Religion and History in St Patrick’s College, Carlow, plays in goal for both Laois and Portlaoise across both ladies football and camogie.
This will be Cara’s first time taking part in an international volunteer programme, but has been involved in local community initiatives and youth support activities.
“I’ve worked with children through coaching, mentoring, and helping out at events – and it felt like a natural next step to take those skills somewhere they might be needed even more,” she said.
Cara said South Africa stood out to her “because of its rich history, cultural diversity, and the ongoing need for educational and developmental support in some communities.
“I was really inspired by the resilience and spirit of the people I read about, and I felt drawn to contribute to something long-term and impactful. I also saw it as an opportunity to learn from a culture very different from my own.”
The trip is being undertaken as part of the Camp South Africa programme, which “creates life-changing experiences that leave a positive impact.”
Those who wish to donate and help to provide resources and create impactful experiences for the children can do so on Cara’s GoFundMe page here.
Cara has so far raised almost €1,300 of her €4,000 target.
