Portlaoise CBS Awards Night 2025 Main

St Mary’s CBS Portlaoise hosted its annual awards night recently – a celebration of student achievement, leadership, and community spirit.

The evening was made even more special with the return of past pupil James Phelan.

He fondly recalled his time as a Meitheal leader and shared his inspiring journey from securing a basketball scholarship in the USA to returning home to play with the Portlaoise Panthers.

James fittingly presented the 2024–25 Sixth Year Meitheal Awards to the very group he had once mentored as first years.

The audience were treated to a fantastic musical interlude by local band The Controversy, featuring Adam Reilly, Erin O’Dwyer, Aidan Dermody, and Nieve Leath.

Continuing the basketball theme, Killester Superleague player Paul Dick spoke about his own journey after school, overcoming injuries to pursue his sporting passion.

Paul presented many sporting awards, including gold medals to the U-19 A All-Ireland basketball champions, with a special nod to Captain Cillian O’Connell, who had previously marked Paul in club competition.

The evening concluded with the presentation of our prestigious school awards.

The Anne Prendergast Award was won by Fionn Stack – an exceptionally talented literary and English student.

Sports Person of the Year went to Cillian O’Connell, captain of the U-19 ‘A’ Basketball Champions.

The Martin Conroy Award went to Evan Holden, a dedicated Meitheal leader and pillar of student support.

The ‘From Each Their Best’ Award went to Ben O’Connor, known for his tireless effort and school spirit.

While the Territt Cup – Overall Student of the Year was awarded to Jack Murrell.

Jack was described as an academic high achiever, Meitheal leader, Laois Debate Cup winner, and talented musician.

The night ended on a high note, with several students receiving a wide range of awards, including subject excellence, extra-curricular recognition, and outstanding achievement awards.

A heartfelt farewell was given to MC, Ms Deirdre Carroll, marking her 15th and final year hosting the event and the end of 28 remarkable years at St Mary’s CBS.
