Transition Year language students from Heywood CS have been teaching French and German in the local primary school, Ballinakill in recent weeks.

Principal Ms Sinéad Campion liaised with language teachers in Heywood to establish the language programme.

Approximately 30 TY students were involved in teaching the students.

They planned lessons and delivered lively, interactive and play-based classes to 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th classes with the co-operation of their teachers Ms Fiona O’Leary and Ms Brennan.

TY students demonstrated excellent understanding and pedagogical skills. Above all they greatly enjoyed their experience with the children in Ballinakill NS.

The students then came to Heywood for some pastries and a little tour of the school.

Mr Jackman chatted with them about the importance of language learning and they received a small presentation on behalf of the language department.

Meanwhile, the TY students also hosted a pop up restaurant in their school which was a tremendous success.

‘Heywood Boulevard’ was the result of a Transition Year module culminating in cooking for and serving 96 guests in a specially constructed ‘intimate’ setting that rivalled many commercial restaurants.

The students designed the menu, transformed the school canteen, set and served tables, cooked the food and cleaned up.

A spokesperson for the school congratulated all involved.

They said: “A huge congratulations to all the students and staff involved.

“A special thanks to Ms O’Connor TY Coordinator, Conor and Georga Wafer from Foodschool, Ms Barry and Ms Mcdonald from the home Economics department, Lisa from our school canteen, our care takers Seamus, Larry and Bosco and school management who all helped to make this happen.

“Thank you to the Castlearms Hotel in Durrow for helping us out with furniture on the night.”
