A Laois County Councillor is calling on Minister for Justice Jim O’Callaghan to issue deportation order to anyone who comes into the country and makes threats.
Independent Councillor Caroline Dwane-Stanley made the call after Gardai in Abbeyleix arrested a man who was alleged to have done just that.
Yesterday, Gardai confirmed they had arrested a man and declared there was ‘no threat’ to the public any more.
There has been an online frenzy over the past couple of days when a video of a man making threats towards Irish people and children went viral online.
In the video, the man posted that he would be ‘coming’ and would be ‘slicing your babies, kids and you’.
Following that video, posts online suggested that the man alleged to have made these threats was spotted in a range of locations across Laois.
The man was reported to have been seen in Portlaoise, Mountmellick and Mountrath over the last few days by members of the public.
On Wednesday morning, Scoil Mhuire Abbeyleix informed parents that the school was on lockdown after the man in question had been spotted in the town.
A short time after that, Gardai released a statement saying they had made an arrest.
Following on from that, Independent Councillor Caroline Dwane-Stanley has called on Minister O’Callaghan to act.
She said: “I am calling on the Minister for Justice Jim O’Callaghan to sign deportation orders immediately, for anyone who comes into this Country and issues threats to the public and our children.
“No community should have to endure such threats.”
This message was echoed by Cllr Dwane-Stanley’s husband, TD Brian Stanley.
He said: “It’s good news that the person who has been causing so much concern in the County in the past few days has been apprehended by Gardai earlier today.
“Well done to the Gardai, they now need to be allowed to get on with their job.
“If any visitor to the state threatens to injure or kill people, the Minister for Justice needs to sanction their removal from the juristiction without delay.”
