News in Brief: New Companion Pass for over 70s, new dedicated Small Business Unit, and €50,000 approved for two Laois projects

Over 70s to benefit from new Companion Pass

People over the age of 7 will soon be entitled to bring a friend or relative (aged 16 or older) with them and travel for free on public transport.

The Free Travel Companion Pass will benefit the more than 6,000 people in Laois that are over 70 once introduced this coming September.

“This will make a real difference in people’s lives. If you have to travel to a hospital or medical appointment, you can bring somebody along with you on public transport for free,” Laois Fine Gael TD Willie Aird said.

“For day trips, concerts, family events, and matches, people over 70 can be reassured that they don’t have to miss out for fear of traveling alone, they can bring a companion along with them for free.

“The Department of Social Protection is now writing to eligible persons to inform them of their entitlement to the Free Travel Companion Pass from September 2025.”

New dedicated Small Business Unit established

The Department Enterprise, Tourism and Employment have established a new dedicated Small Business Unit to focus on the needs of small businesses across the country.

Minister at the Department Peter Burke said the Small Business Unit “will focus on rigorously implementing the SME Test, to ensure the perspectives of small businesses are considered across Government before new legislation or regulation is introduced.

“The Unit will simplify the access to grants and supports for businesses though the National Enterprise Hub. It will also ensure the Local Enterprise Offices are properly resourced to help small businesses.”

Welcoming the establishment of the Unit, Deputy Aird said: “SMEs are the backbone of the Irish economy, providing employment and economic benefit across the country.

“They employ two thirds of all people in Ireland and have faced significant cost pressures in recent years.

“We must ensure we continue to support our small businesses in Laois and this focus on SMEs at the highest level is a signal of our intent.”

Almost €50,000 approved for two Laois projects

€25,200 has been approved for drainage works on the River Nore in Cloncough, near Shanahoe and towards Watercastle, Durrow.

A number of homes are at risk of flooding and this funding is to address this problem.

Additionally €22,863 has been approved through Heritage Grants for restoration works on the sluice gates at the Killeshin Waterworks.

In welcoming the investment, Laois Fianna Fáil TD Sean Fleming said: “This is an attractive amenity and will enhance the area and improve safety.”
