There were scenes of great celebration in Abbotstown on Saturday as Laois claimed the Celtic Challenge for the second year running.
Brendan Phelan’s charges got the better of Meath following a ding dong battle in damp conditions.
There were several stand-out performances on the Laois side, with Bobby O’Conner, Dan Bowe, Tadgh Hughes, Scott Kelly and Oisin McRedmond all playing incredibly well.
Laois put in an impressive display against Roscommon in the semi-finals two weeks ago to set up this decider with a Meath team who overcame Mayo on the other side of the draw.
It was a nervous start from Laois as Brendan Phelan’s side found themselves three points adrift early on.
But they quickly put that behind them with two goals in two minutes as the game came alive.
The first goal came in the eighth minute when Davy Delaney slipped the ball to Jamie Fitzpatrick who played his pass across the face of goal where the arriving Tadgh Hughes was there to smash his shot into the net.
Two minutes later and it was Fitzpatrick raising a green flag after Meath failed to clear their lines.
Scott Kelly added a third before the end to leave it 3-3 to 1-9 at half time and Laois put in a stellar second half performance to win it.
Sportsfile have supplied some great images from the game and the celebrations afterwards.
