A young Laois person is among four teenagers who are walking from Mizen Head in Cork to Malin Head in Donegal in aid of the Irish Cancer Society.
Finn Craig, who plays with O’Dempsey’s GAA club, is joined by his three fellow students at Newbridge College, Kildare – Keane Marquadt, Sean Judson and Sean Durcan.
The Malin to Mizen journey is the traversal of the whole length of Ireland and is a popular route often attempted by cyclists and walkers in an effort to raise money for charities.
The distance is close to 600km, with the four teens setting a course of 40km per day to complete their walk – the equivalent of a marathon a day for two full weeks.
The quartet said they felt “lucky enough to be in the position to be able” to undertake the walk, and said they were keen to help the Irish Cancer Society “for the amazing work that they do and the amount of lives that they help to impact.”
The Irish Cancer Society are a community of patients, survivors, volunteers, supporters, health and social care professionals and researchers.
They work towards transforming the experiences and outcomes of people affected by cancer through our advocacy, support services and research.
The boys started their charity walk last week, setting off from Mizen Head, but they had barely left County Cork when they hit their initial target of €10,000.
Having passed through Limerick and Clare, they reached the halfway point this weekend when they made it to Tuam, County Galway.
They will continue on through Mayo, Sligo and Leitrim before arriving in Letterkenny and on to Malen Head.
The gargantuan trek has so far raised over €19,000 of the €20,000 target.
Those who wish to donate can do so on the group’s GoFundMe page here.
But the group remain positive that they can surpass even this revised amount, saying “just because we have a €20,000-goal doesn’t mean we can’t shoot for the stars and go for as much as we possibly can.”
