Athletics: 16 medals including six golds for St Abban’s at Leinster Track and Field Championships 2025

Leinster Track and Field Championships 2025

Junior, Senior and Masters athletes from St Abban’s AC took part in the Leinster Track and Field Championships over the weekend. The Championships were held across two days in the SETU Carlow with athletes competing  across a wide variety of events.

On Saturday, Day 1 of the Championships saw phenomenal success for St Abban’s, with the club winning an outstanding eight medals – two gold, five silver and one bronze.

Aoibhin McDonald won the Senior Women’s Pole Vault with a clearance of 2.80m while Peter Condron won the M-40 400m in a time of 54.59.

There were five second-place finishes, including John Delaney in the U-20 400m with a time of 51.20; Tomas Kenny in the M-35 1500m in a time of 4.32; and Tom O’ Connor in the M-70 100m.

Brian Kelly claimed silver in the Senior Men’s 1500m; while his brother Ger also claimed silver in the Senior Men’s Weight for Distance after a throw of 5.55m.

The final medallist on the day was Niall Harvey who finished just behind Kelly in the Senior Men’s 1500m to claim bronze in 4.11.

There was more success for the club on Day 2 where St Abban’s once again won eight medals – four gold, three silver and one bronze.

The four victories came courtesy of Katie Baldwin in the U-20 Triple Jump with a new PB of 10.84m; and John Delaney in the U-20 Men’s 800m to go with his silver from Day 1.

Bernie Lawless won the W-40 Throws Heptathlon with a total of 2487 points after seven throws events over two days; while John Territ also took gold in the M-60 Throws Heptathlon with a total of 4543 points.

There were silver medals for Saragh Buggy in the Senior Women’s Triple Jump with a jump of 12.79m – missing out on gold by just 2cm; Patsy Baldwin in the M-50 Heptathlon with 3329 points; and Michael Kelly in the M-70 Heptathlon with 3968 points after 7 events. Baldwin also claimed bronze in the M-55 High Jump with a clearance at 1.30m.

Despite setting a new PB and Club Record, Ger Kelly narrowly missed out on a podium spot when he finished in fourth in the Senior Men’s Hammer with a throw of 44.17m.

Fit4Life Summer League – Stage 3 Rossmore

Stage 3 of the Fit4Life League took place in the picturesque setting of Rossmore last. 153 athletes finished, with Ian Molloy first home overall in a time of 13:37 and Grace Reilly first female across the line in 15:17.

The next stage will take athletes to a new venue in Barrowhouse on Wednesday, June 18. Registration is open from 6:30pm with the race beginning at 7:30pm.
