Laois County Council are set to complete the purchase of the former cinema in Portarlington.
This is according to Independent Councillor Aidan Mullins who confirmed the news this morning.
Cllr Mullins says that the building is set to be turned into an enterprise space.
The old Savoy cinema was opened by 1945 but initially closed in 1989.
Taken over by a new operator, it re-opened 1990. It closed some time after and has been boarded up ever since.
The cinema, located on Market Square, is famous for its appearance in the 1992 film ‘Into the West’ and a mural to commemorate this in June 2019.
He said: “Laois County Council have just announced that they are currently finalising the purchase of the former cinema in Portarlington.
“It has been vacant for many years and the Council will explore it’s potential to create a new town centre enterprise space.
“This is welcome as the Portarlington Enterprise Centre on Canal Road is at full capacity.
“This will also assist in the continuing upgrade of the Market Square and in the implementation of the Portarlington Regeneration Strategy.”
