The death has occurred of John Phelan from Ballyfin, a highly-respected barrister for many years.
Aged in his mid 70s, Mr Phelan was a former senior counsel, well regarded initially on the legal circuit locally before ‘taking the silks’. He had a long and illustrious legal career, where he was involved in a series of high-profile cases.
He also acted as proprietor of the iconic Deadman’s Inn in Ballyfin, which was the long-time family business.
Mr Phelan was educated in Cistercian Roscrea, where among his classmates was Dick Spring, future Labour Party leader and Tanaiste. The two also later served together in the Law Library.
Known as a great story teller, Mr Phelan was known to ‘hold court’ in Donoghue’s of Portlaoise on occasion, another great local institution.
A talented musician and actor, he was heavily involved in amateur dramatics and was a leading light in the renowned Ballyfin Players group for a number of years.
John passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family.
Son of the late John and Julia Phelan Ballyfin, he is predeceased by his sister Nóra Wall and her husband William.

Deeply regretted by his loving family, son in law Frank, daughter-in-law Erin, his niece Julie-Ann and her husband Jean Marie. Also Rachel and Jack’s mother Joan. All his friends and colleagues in the Law Library.
Reposing at his home at Pallas Big on Friday evening from 5pm until 8pm. Removal on Saturday to arrive at St Fintans Church, Ballyfin for 11am requiem mass.
Interment will follow in the adjoining churchyard.
