Sadness in Killeen and Barrowhouse communities at the passing of JJ McDonald

There is sadness in the Killeen, Barrowhouse and wider communities this week with the passing of JJ McDonald.

Mr McDonald was a pillar of the local community – hugely respected in farming, community and political circles.

Known for his wisdom and wit, he’d hold his own in any company – be it with Government ministers or holding court at a football match or over a drink, where he’d have a word for everyone.

As well as serving on the board of Leinster Marts, he was also on various IFA committees over the years as a strong advocate for farming issues. He was also a proud Fine Gael member and an almost ever-present at conventions and county meetings.

The McDonald family is synonymous with the Arles-Killeen GAA club and a minute’s silence was observed in his memory Saturday’s ACFL Division 2 semi-final between Arles-Killeen and Rosenallis in Rossena.

JJ’s wife Kathleen was a long-serving secretary and was honoured by the club late last year during a visit from GAA President Jarlath Burns.

JJ’s son Paul was a member of the Laois team that won Leinster senior honours in 2003 and JJ’s family, including children and grandchildren, have been heavily involved in various capacities in Arles-Killeen.

John Joseph (JJ) passed away peacefully at home on the 27th June 2025, surrounded by his loving family.

Beloved husband of Kathleen, dear father to Thomas, Paul, Brendan, Enda and Marie-Therese as well as his daughters-in-law Yolanda, Mary-Emily and Bronwen and son-in-law Oliver. Deeply missed by his adored grandchildren Jack, Aoife, Isla, Elena, Aaron, Oliver, Lachlan, Tommy and Eanna, his sisters Bridget and Margaret as well as their spouses Tom and Joe.

Reposing at home in Tankardstown (eircode R14XE76) on Sunday 29th June from 3pm, concluding with Rosary at 8pm. Arriving at St. Mary’s Church Barrowhouse for 3pm Requiem Mass on Monday afternoon, followed by interment in the adjoining Cemetery.

Family flowers only please. House strictly private on Monday morning.
