The Twin Trees Festival is back in Ballinakill, Co Laois, this July 11th and 12th, with a vibrant new summer format—moving away from its usual Heritage Week slot and bringing a refreshed two-day celebration of art, film, and creativity right into the heart of the community.
This year’s programme is packed with events for all ages, from painting workshops and open-air art sessions to hands-on creativity for kids and teens—culminating in a magical series of free outdoor Irish film screenings in the stunning surrounds of Heywood Gardens.
Highlights Include:
En Plein Air Painting (11th & 12th July)
Set against the breathtaking backdrop of Heywood Gardens and the village of Ballinakill, our popular En Plein Air event invites artists of all levels to paint outdoors and soak up the inspiration of their surroundings.
With expert guidance from renowned tutors Jock Nichol, Neal Greig, and Hollie Murphy, participants can join optional workshops on Day One or simply spend both days painting at their own pace in one of Ireland’s most scenic garden settings.
Teenage Art Workshop (Saturday 12th July)
Led by talented Midlands-based artist Kate Knowles, this full-day workshop is designed to inspire and empower young creatives aged 13–18. The session includes sketchbook-making, painting techniques, and an outdoor session in Heywood Gardens. No experience required—just imagination and curiosity.
Children’s Art Workshop (SOLD OUT)
Tutor Linda Jones leads this popular clay sculpting session on Saturday 12th July, inspired by the Irish animated film Song of the Sea. All participants receive free admission to the children’s movie screening that afternoon.
Free Outdoor Movie Screenings – Irish Cinema at its Best
This year, we’re proud to present three Irish films in the magical open-air setting of Heywood Gardens. Admission is free, but advance booking is essential:
