The Portlaoise Parish Centre was abuzz with warmth and generosity on Saturday, July 12, as the local community came together for a coffee morning in aid of GAA Palestine.
The event drew a fantastic crowd, with supporters of all ages gathering to enjoy a cuppa, conversation, and an array of delicious homemade treats — many of which were kindly donated by attendees themselves.
The spirit of community and solidarity was palpable throughout the morning.
Thanks to the incredible support and generosity of all who attended, a total of €522.77 was raised on the day.
These funds will go directly to GAA Palestine, supporting their efforts to foster Irish sports, wellbeing, and community among young people in Palestine.
In addition, organisers highlighted that the GAA Palestine team — 33 children and 14 mentors from the West Bank — are due to arrive in Ireland next Saturday, July 18, for a two-week tour.
However, their plans are currently in limbo due to issues with their visas. Laois IPSC (Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign) is urgently calling on all local and national government officials to intercede and ensure this vital tour can go ahead.
These children have been eagerly awaiting this opportunity, training every week despite the challenges of crossing strict military checkpoints, and the community hopes Ireland will welcome them as planned.
Organisers expressed their gratitude to everyone who helped make the coffee morning such a success — from those who baked and donated goodies, to those who came along to support the cause.
“We are so proud of our community for coming out in such numbers and for showing such kindness and solidarity,” said one of the organisers. “Every euro raised will help make a real difference on the ground in Palestine.”
