Laois duo claim double American hurling championship glory with Tipperary San Francisco

James Duggan and Donnchadh Hartnett San Francisco Tipperary

Two Laois players were celebrating on the double recently as they claimed hurling championship glory in America.

Rosenallis’ Donnchadh Hartnett and James Duggan of The Harps made waves across the water this summer.

After Laois’s campaign came to an end at the Preliminary All-Ireland quarter final stage, the pair headed stateside.

They signed for Tipperary San Francisco and initially competed in the Western Conference.

Here, they reached the final where they defeated Na Fianna in the decider.

That qualified them for the All-American finals which took place in Chicago.

Tipperary opened with a dominant performance against local side Michael Cusack Hurling Club of Chicago, winning 2-25 to 1-7.

Later that same day, they faced Father Tom’s of Boston, where despite playing with 14 men and trailing by six points at one stage, they came back to win by a point – 1-24 to 2-19.

Galway Boston were the opponents in the final with Duggan scoring the only goal of the game.

Flicking the ball over a defender’s head in the process, Duggan helped his side to a 1-27 to 0-21 win.

With championship medals in their back pockets, The Harps and Rosenallis will be looking forward to having the lads home soon.
